About Us

OWLIO™ was established by Ewan in Edinburgh, 2024. Ewan is an Edinburgh-based artist whose expertise lies in the art of sewing. During the Covid period, Ewan honed his craft under the guidance of his auntie, refining the skills he inherited and developing them into a true art form. His work is deeply influenced by the rich history and vibrant culture of Scotland.

Ewan's creations encompass a diverse range of charming items, including whimsical owls, adorable timorous beasties, and delightful pumpkin containers, alongside a variety of practical household essentials such as accordion purses, key holders, handbags, pencil cases and journal covers.

Each piece is carefully crafted with a labour of love, meticulously hand-sewn with precision and care. Ewan places a strong emphasis on ethical sourcing of materials, carefully selecting fabrics that not only exude aesthetic appeal but also uphold environmental values. From colourful tartans to exotic patterns and even recycled curtains sourced from charity shops, Ewan's dedication to sustainability shines through in his choice of materials.

For him, the art of hand-sewing is not just a craft but a means of expressing his passion for environmental consciousness and creativity.

“It is debatable whether contemporary art distinguishes between art and crafts. But if there is a dividing line, Ewan’s work is right on that line. Put his work in a white space gallery and it’s conceptual art. Think Love in a Time of Covid. Ewan explores themes of separation, distance and connection. During the Covid lockdown his aunt, 5,000 miles away in Sanmenxia, transferred skills to him through the net. A little needle and a lengthy thread connected the love of families far away. Those objects were symbols of hope and optimism in dark days. Here Ewan’s objects may look like craft items; in fact, they represent human connection, and the transmission of skill and cultural values across time and space.”
